New DUI task force could help prevent drunk driving tragedies
COLUMBUS, Ga. –
A new DUI enforcement unit is cracking down on drunk drivers in Muscogee County. The Georgia state patrol said one third of the fatalities that occur in Muscogee County are DUI related. On a state level, 400 to 600 fatalities occur by someone under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The ‘Nighthawks’ units are funded by a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. The team is made up of a supervisor and 5 road troopers. The unit will split their time between Muscogee county and Bibb County spending two weeks of every month in Columbus. The team will patrol during peak DUI hours.
Sleep Apnea Treatment
Do you suffer from sleep apnea? If so, you know what a frightening experience it can be to wake up feeling like you’ve been holding your breath. Many folks use a CPAP (continuous pressure airflow pressure) device, which uses a light amount of continuous air pressure to keep your breathing passage open.
Certainly, a CPAP does take some getting used to. Wearing a mask on your face can take some getting used to, which is to say nothing about having air constantly blown down your windpipe. Of course, compared to the frustrations and downright scariness of sleep apnea, this can be an acceptable trade. Also consider that sleep apnea can be caused by obesity, and that weight loss can be part of your sleep apnea treatment.

A Flying Car for Just $279,000
The vehicle he’s talking about is a production prototype for one of the first “roadable aircraft” approved by the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority: a flying car that’s capable of being driven legally to the local airport, unfolding its wings, and then taking off and cruising at 100 mph before landing on a runway and driving you to your final destination. That’s all while delivering 35 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg in the air.
Trayvon Martin: Before the world heard the cries
The February 26 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, 17, at the hands of George Zimmerman, 28, a neighborhood watch captain who said he acted in self-defense, has riveted the nation, largely because of race. Trayvon Martin was black. George Zimmerman is white and Hispanic.
For about 10 days, the story remained obscure. Television news from nearby Orlando aired a few segments. The Orlando Sentinel published two brief articles, and the twice-weekly Sanford Herald ran 213 words. Otherwise, there was media silence. This is an account of what happened before everyone knew Trayvon Martin’s name.

"The Hunger Games" builds target audience
Mirroring a national boom, introductory archery classes have been packed as the buzz for “The Hunger Games” and its bow-toting heroine, Katniss Everdeen, has grown. This weekend, as “Hunger Games” fans spent $155 million at theaters, classes at the range were filled, mostly with girls and women hoping to channel their inner Katniss, said instructor Eva Yam.
“The last couple of weeks have been crazy, especially this last weekend,” said Yam, who read “The Hunger Games” trilogy last year, hoping to keep up on story references from her new students.
“(The crowds) were definitely all ‘Hunger Games’-related. We had a group of 20-something women who came in for a birthday party, who were going to the movie afterward. One of them had a T-shirt that said ‘Team Katniss.’”
Pilot breakdown draws attention to mental health standards
The midflight breakdown of a JetBlue pilot has sparked concerns about psychological screening for flight crews.
Capt. Clayton Osbon’s erratic behavior prompted Flight 191 from New York to Las Vegas to make an unscheduled landing in Amarillo, Texas, on Tuesday after crew and passengers intervened and subdued the 49-year-old pilot.
Osbon “yelled jumbled comments about Jesus, September 11th, Iraq, Iran, and terrorists,” according to a federal criminal complaint filed against Osbon. One passenger quoted Osbon as saying, “Pray f—— now for Jesus Christ,” the complaint said.
“It just seemed like something triggered him to go off the wall. He would be calm one minute and then just all of a sudden turn,” said passenger Jason Levin.

Short Sale Vs. Foreclosure
Losing your home is a terrible situation to face. Knowing that you’re not alone doesn’t provide much comfort either. You do have options, though; Most know about foreclosure, but have you considered a short sale? To read the full article, visit the website above.
A short sale is an agreement with your lender to sell the home for less than the amount still owed. It will still affect your credit score to an extent, but it can be preferable to foreclosure if you can get a short sale approved.
Apple’s New iPad Faces 4G Snags Outside U.S.
In Australia, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company will head back to court in early May in a fight to retain the “4G” branding on the latest edition of its popular tablet computer, while Sweden’s consumer watchdog is considering whether to launch an investigation into whether the labelling is misleading.
The issue arises because the frequency bands allocated to run next-generation 4G networks differ from country to country. On its website, Apple states: “4G LTE is supported only on AT&T; and Verizon networks in the U.S. and on Bell, Rogers, and Telus networks in Canada. Data plans sold separately. See your carrier for details.”
Apple has already agreed with the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission, or ACCC, to clarify claims the new iPad is compatible with 4G telecommunications networks and will offer to refund early purchasers of the product who may feel misled about the iPad’s capabilities in the country.
Some ‘Hunger Games’ critics say Jennifer Lawrence was too ‘big’ to play Katniss
While Jennifer Lawrence’s acting performance in “The Hunger Games” was generally praised, some critics are saying she was too large to play Katniss Everdeen, a teen from a starving futuristic land, who must hunt every day to keep her family fed.
In her March 22 New York Times review, Manohla Dargis wrote, “A few years ago Ms. Lawrence might have looked hungry enough to play Katniss, but now, at 21, her seductive, womanly figure makes a bad fit for a dystopian fantasy about a people starved into submission.”
Mega Millions fever hits with record jackpot
The jackpot grew to an estimated $476 million after no one won the drawing Tuesday night, and there is expected to be much demand for tickets in the next few days in advance of Friday’s drawing.
California’s Mega Millions record is a $390-million payout won in March 2007.
Aggressive parents force egg hunt cancellation
An annual Easter egg hunt attended by hundreds of children has been canceled because of misbehavior last year. Not by the kids, but by the grown-ups.
Too many parents determined to see their children get an egg jumped a rope marking the boundaries of the children-only hunt at Bancroft Park last year. The hunt was over in seconds, to the consternation of eggless tots and the rules-abiding parents.
Organizers say the hunt in Old Colorado City has gotten too big for the hundreds of children and parents now attending. They canceled this year.
‘Hunger Games’ opens to estimated $155 million
“The Hunger Games” is already Lionsgate’s highest-grossing film ever and is poised to ultimately deliver more than $300 million in profits to the company’s bottom line from ticket sales, DVDs, television and licensed products, several analysts predicted Sunday. With three sequels to come, the series should ultimately produce more than $1 billion in profits.
Woods ends drought, turns eye to Masters
Tiger Woods finally brought the buzz back to the very thing that made him famous – winning.
Two weeks after another injury scare, Woods looked dominant as ever Sunday in his traditional final-round red shirt to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
It was his first PGA Tour victory since a sex scandal at the end of 2009 led to one of the greatest downfalls in sports. And with the Masters only two weeks away, Woods looks more capable than ever of resuming his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus in the majors.
Woods closed with a 2-under-par 70 for a five-shot win over Graeme McDowell.
NFL – Jets’ move to grab Tim Tebow looks like a gimmick
In some ways, I feel a little sorry about what is happening to Tim Tebow.
Going to the New York Jets to be a Wildcat quarterback won’t help him develop as a quarterback. Jets owner Woody Johnson said the team traded for Tebow to acquire a winning player who could add versatility to the Jets’ offense.
Supreme Court set for key health overhaul hearing
The case has been polarizing for the United States: it would provide health insurance to some 32 million Americans lacking coverage, a major social accomplishment for some, but also would force people to buy insurance — an intrusion into civil liberties for others.
The top US court has set aside six hours for oral arguments in the case, the longest in the past 45 years. Hearings typically last only about an hour.
